Poyln: Jewish Life in the Old Country
Published in Hardcover by Metropolitan Books (November, 1999)
Authors: Alter Kacyzne, Marek Web, Sulamita Kacyzne-Reale, and Yivo Institute for Jewish Research
Average review score:

On par with Vishniac. A great treasure
He was truly a renaissance man and center of intellectual life: essayist, journalist, founder of a left-wing daily, worshipped photographer of the great and humble, and editor of both Peretz and Ansky. He was murdered in a Jewish cemetery by Ukranians in Tarnopol after escaping the Nazi's. His daughter survived, and was instrumental in getting this book published. Unfortunately she died earlier this year prior to publication. This collection is a treasure. My favorites are the famed photo of a Lublin cheder (1924), and the one of Khane Kolski, taken when she was 106, in which she says that her son in America doesnt even believe that she is still alive. To me, the photos create a lost world; but to the readers of The Forward, for whom the photos were taken, it probably reminded them why they fled the shtetls for the Golden Land of America.

Preparing for Terrorism: A Property Manager's Guide
Published in Paperback by Inst of Real Estate Management (June, 2002)
Author: Institute of Real Estate Management Foundation
Average review score:

Incredibly Comprehensive
Property managers are professionals who are responsible for public and private buildings housing residential and commercial occupants. After seeing what happened to properties in New York City on September 11, 2001, the professional association serving managers of real estate prepared a manual as a guide for their members.

This book is intended for people managing any kind of property-office buildings, apartment buildings, public buildings, schools, churches, and other structures that may be vulnerable to a terrorist attack, directly or indirectly. These managers must be able to assess their exposure, understand the problems they may face, and be prepared to respond to whatever happens. To accomplish these objectives, they need knowledge, plans, and preparation. This book tells those specialists everything they need to know . . . and then some.

As I read this book, I was struck with the depth and breadth of the information presented. Many readers will be overwhelmed and will have to slow their reading pace to absorb it all. Personally, I had a bit of an advantage: the first two books I wrote as an author, back in the early 1980s, were in the field of local government disaster planning. Even with my level of knowledge, I was highly impressed with the strength of this volume.

The book is organized into seven sections: Introduction to Terrorism, Responding to Terrorist Acts, Building Procedures, Training the Building's Staff, Training the Building's Residential and Commercial Tenants, Building Recovery, and Publications and Resources. The 18 chapters cover everything from attacks against individuals to fire, bomb threats, civil disturbances, chemical and biological agents, elevator emergencies, nuclear and radiological attacks, and evacuations. There's some good material on how to write emergency plans, build and train an emergency response team, and function to protect the property and people in and around it.

This is a powerful book that should be read-and followed-by every property manager in America. Now. Even if you skip some parts, whatever you learn will put you in a considerably better position than you're probably in today.

Presidential Judgment : Foreign Policy Decision Making in the White House
Published in Paperback by Hollis Publishing Company (01 October, 2000)
Authors: Robert Bowie, Institute of Politics, Theodore Sorensen, Francis Bator, Gerald Ford, Jeane Kirkpatrick, Brent Scowcroft, and Aaron Lobel
Average review score:

Extraordinary Material
Aaron Lobel has put together a masterful and enduring volume that is dedicated to revealing the enigma of Presidential Judgement in formulating Foreign Policy.

From Ted Sorenson's revealing account of how President Kennedy used his Sense of History, Priorities, and Responsibility to determine the best course during the Cuban Missile Crisis TO Brent Scowcroft's candid representation of President Bush holding together the fragile alliance in Saudi Arabia during Desert Shield & Storm --- this is a masterpiece.

Project Manager Competency Development Framework
Published in Paperback by Project Management Institute (September, 2002)
Author: Project Management Institute
Average review score:

Giant Checklist to improve your Project Management skills!
For the longest time, the main standard that PMI focussed on was the development of the 'Guide to the PMBOK'. The purpose of that Guide was to 'Improve the Performance of Projects'. There is another standard (on WBS) to achieve the same purpose.

In recent years, PMI has decided to address other goals like 'Improve the Performance of Project Personnel'. It is towards achieving this end that the standard 'Project Management Competency Development (PMCD) Framework' was developed. An exposure draft was released recently and this book is that exposure draft in it's entirety. PMI is now accepting comments on this exposure draft and a final version will be released soon based on the feedback.

PMI has done a fantastic job in creating this standard. It is very usable, much more than the 'Guide to the PMBOK'. It is only 108 pages long out of which the main standard is only 70 pages long. The rest is Appendices that outline the process followed in developing the standard and a glossary of terms. Even in these 70 pages, the first 12 pages are the main material to be read. These 12 pages describe everything you need to know about the PMCD framework and how to use it. The next 58 pages are nothing but a giant checklist that you can use in assessing your project management competencies and coming up with a plan to fill any gaps you may have. These 58 pages will be the most used pages in your project management career.

The basic idea in the standard is that there are three areas of competencies that a project manager needs to be concerned with - PM Knowledge, PM Performance, and PM Personal Competencies. When a project manager improves in these three areas, the projects will see an improvement in their success too. These three competencies are further split into multiple sub-sections and described in sufficient detail.

A great way to use this standard is to read the standard cover to cover and come up with an individualized plan for oneself. I am currently in the process of coming up with this plan for myself and I plan on maintaining it for a year before revamping it. The print function on this electronic file is supposed to be disabled but it wasn't disabled on my download. I am currently contacting PMI to alert them of this so they can fix it. All their other standards that you can download have their print functionality disabled.

Even otherwise, this book has a very small price to pay considering the benefits. How many other professions have such a logical and systematic approach that is documented in 70 pages to improve your skills? Overall, this is a standard that has been long overdue in the Project Management profession. There could be changes to this draft over the next couple of years as PMI gets feedback from people like yourself after you start using this framework and find room for improvement. Enjoy this valuable book!

Public Policy and Economic Competition in Japan: Change and Continuity in Antimonopoly Policy, 1973-1995 (Nissan Institute/Routledge Japanese Studies)
Published in Hardcover by Routledge (July, 2002)
Author: Michael L. Beeman
Average review score:

Brings the Japan Fair Trade Commission to life!!!!!!!
This is not just an exploration of Japan's antimonopoly policy, it is an exploration of life. We are exposed to a society's search for it's own conscience. Dr Beeman presents the Fair Trade Commission as a fully developed character who's trial and tribulations truley engross the reader. I was left with not just a greater knowledge of antimonopoly policy in Japan, but with a renewed zest for life. The world is a better place with this publication of Dr. Beeman's life work - we can only hope that more people will adhere to the principles presented here.
